March 22 is World Water Day

by Clockwork

Water for Life

Water is a necessity. Water is essential to all living things…yet, one in eight people in the world don’t have access to safe water, millions of women and children must still spend several hours a day, collecting water from distant, often polluted sources, and 2.5 billion people live without a toilet.

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) has marked March 22 as World Water Day, annually observed as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Each year, a theme is determined. 2009 marks “Shared Water – Shared Opportunities “, focusing on trans-boundary water and the idea that managing water across borders could promote trust and understanding, leading to a more peaceful and secure world, enabling sustainable economic growth.

As part of this international effort, right here in Kansas City, Water Partners International puts forth energy daily to raise grant funds and implement programs that assist with bringing clean, drinkable water and proper sanitation to over 8 developing countries. Water Partners strive to unite and collaborate with entities in these countries, that understand and are part of each local culture- honoring their knowledge of the land and people- to create projects that serve to benefit these communities and integrate technology, health and hygiene education, and instill a sense of duty and pride in the people of each community.

The land of contrasts

by Clockwork
Take a trip through Kansas and you’re bound to see something amazing. Not the world’s largest gopher or ball of twine – no, not that amazing. But something pretty cool. Big Brutus, the world’s largest remaining electric shovel in the world. Second largest in history, this 16 story tall digger weighs 11 million pounds and was used 24 hours a day, seven days a week from 1963 to 1974 when its purpose expired in what is now a field in southeastern Kansas. Why would one need a shovel that used 15,000 horsepower to move 150 tons of material at a time? Energy. Coal to be specific. Big Brutus moved 150 tons of overburden (everything above the
coal) and lumbered through Kansas fields, its internal generators cranking enough electricity to power a community of 30,000 homes. But it was for the shovel, not for the homes. The coal, that was for the homes. http://www.bigbrutus.org/
Now fast forward 14 days…..

Coming back from Colorado on a never ending ribbon of asphalt leads to hallucinations. I thought I drove past miles of wind turbines. Rub those eyes and look again in the rear view – still there. Tradewind Energy, headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, has some goodies for the Kansans. 250 megawatts of good ole fashioned wind generated energy from the same stiff crosswinds that blow the tumbleweeds across I-70 and leads me Cozy Burgers, the best way to enter a homestretch drive from Denver back to KC.
The Smoky Hills Wind Farm just west of Salina, KS at the conclusion of Phase II construction which will add enough wind power to provide service to 45,000 homes, will occupy about 1-2 percent of the 14,000 acres that it currently spans. And if you’re counting CO2’s, that amounts to an offset of 450,000 tons. http://www.tradewindenergy.com/

Dialog

by Clockwork

Imagine complete black. No color, no light…though your eyes are wide open. No guide but a stick and a voice in the dark.

Curiosity took us to a traveling exhibition hosted by Union Station, entitled Dialog in the Dark. Visitors are given a walking stick and led to a room where the light levels are gradually diminished to the point of utter darkness. A voice guides each visitor through a series of galleries designed to replicate real world environments. The voice…from a person who themselves are visually impaired.

Without sight, all other senses are heightened when surrounded with sounds, smells, objects, textures, even subtle changes in climate, as one moves through and experiences each environment. Visitors are challenged to function in each scenario, while being given clues from their guide who explains ‘we don’t see with our eyes’.

As a designer, it is difficult to imagine navigating through this world without the ability to see with our eyes. An awareness of spatial relationships and changes in texture of finish now seem of greater importance. Subtle changes that are often unnoticed by a person with sight become critical means of providing sensory clues to aid in understanding, and moving through one’s environment.

An incredible challenge never to be forgotten… an entirely new sense has been awakened.
